“The Feast of Bacchus” — Jan Brueghel the Younger and Jan Van Balen

Magical grape, orb of condensed sun, kiss of earth, sacred elixir, fruit of the vine: I became enamored of wine as if Cupid had shot me with his rapturous arrow. As with the strain of love that Cupid delivers, my passion came surprisingly. My distant and mild enjoyment blossomed into a beautiful love, the kind written about in books or graced with a ravishing sunset at the end of your favorite indie romance film.

It’s not as if I didn’t enjoy the taste of wine before. I did, but I didn’t have much enthusiasm. I had the bad luck of being cursed to massive hangovers. After my college drinking days, my drinking tapered down to once or twice a month and no matter how much or how little I consumed, I’d find myself with a headache and upset stomach in the morning, which was extremely disappointing because over the years, I had come to deeply enjoy the taste of wine. Maybe it comes from my Italian roots. Once my grandmother’s family was in America, the family continued making small batches of wine, and just like on TV, my grandma and her sisters crushed grapes with their feet as children. That is how I like to imagine it, but it was trial, error, and wine tasting activities that piqued my curiosity and appreciation of wine though the hangovers made me more of an acquaintance than a friend, let alone a lover.

Sadly, it seemed impossible to find a wine that didn’t leave me feeling like I got on the wrong side of Dionysus. All of that changed when I discovered Wonderful Wine Company, more commonly known as Wonderful Wine Co. To be completely clear, in this day and age of influencers, know that I do not work for Wonderful Wine Co. I get no special perks for writing about the wine. As a matter of practice, I only review things if I genuinely think the review will be helpful for people. Wonderful Wine is one of those products. Wonderful Wine is pesticide free and has no added sugar. Because the wine has no added sugar, it is low carb. It’s also vegan friendly for anyone out there who is on the lookout for a vegan wine, id est not filtered with isinglass, fish bladder, or albumen, egg white. I was drawn to the ethos of Wonderful Wine, but I have to admit skepticism. I’ve tried other wines and alcohols that have made similar claims, but this is the first one that I truly felt was drinkable without any hangover. Everyone is different, but since I am sensitive, I can only imagine other people would have a similar drinking experience. Something about this wine’s formulation leaves out the toxins in a way that you can feel.

Even more compelling, since I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes will drink cheap alcohol despite the hangovers, Wonderful Wine tastes incredibly delicious. It has the drinkable mouth feel where you actually feel like your getting hydrates while getting your drink on. There’s a variety of wines they offer; I order the starter pack, which included the 2020 varieties of the Malvasia Blanca, the Chardonnay, and the Rosé. What I noticed is that each wine was complex yet tasty. This makes it not only accessible but enchanting, making for a very pleasant sense of intoxication if that’s something you enjoy. My favorite was the 2020 Malvasia Blanca, which had a smooth guava intake that transformed to a juicy orange with a hint of pineapple, almost like citrus tropical punch. The 2020 Chardonnay had a lemony green apple taste with a bouquet of honeysuckle and a minerally grapefruit finish. Finally, I tried the 2020 Rosé. My initial impression was that of tart strawberry, but the taste grew into an aromatic strawberry sorbet flavor. Each wine had its appeal and character, and I am so curious to discover the rest of their varieties.

Wonderful Wine Co. also provides a pleasing aesthetic experience whether you are visiting their official website or Instagram. Both are colorful and richly designed. Their imagery has a fun, updated 1960s vibe, and each photograph looks like it could be its own painting. This speaks to their attention to detail and quality. They also offer transparency, conveniently placing statistics and other pieces of useful information throughout their website. It was delight to visit their website not only for the visual appeal, but the information they supply is readable and relatable. They aren’t writing for wine snobs. They’re extending their hands out in friendship, inviting their customers to become part of their community. This feeling was confirmed when I signed up for their email list. Their emails were warm and inviting, and best yet, they don’t constantly bombard you with advertising like most companies do. Yes, you still get promotional emails if you’re on the list, but the amount of emails feels reasonable and balanced. If you add them on Instagram, you just might get put on their close friends list, and expect to periodically receive fun picture messages along with surprise deals if you sign up for texts. It’s just like a getting a photo message from a friend, which I think a lot of people can really appreciate after all of the isolation of the past year.

The dazzling appeal of Wonderful Wine Company’s psychedelic packaging was quick to inspire yearning in me. * Each bottle label is like an ombre watercolor of complementary hues. I wanted to start just buying one bottle at a time, but the company does seem to only sell multi-packs, which I understand since they are sending the wine through the mail. It makes sense to sell multi-packs to cut down on everything that goes along with shipping from cost to gas. The packs are well padded, and all of my wines were intact. I also received my wines on time.

I am so glad I discovered Wonderful Wine Co. I feel that their bottles are worth the price, and I don’t mind buying the multi-packs because of that. know that what I am receiving from them isn’t glammed up poison. This may sound odd, but they give me hope for the future. They care about doing the work right and selling quality products while considering their customers’ entire experience.
