Poem: “It’s Just Like Jumping off the Rock” 2013

--

“Ophelia” — John Everett Millais

It’s just like jumping off the rock:

The terror, the dazzling drop,

And then the sweet, cold water,

The kiss of golden sunshine upon the freshly opened lids,

For an instant, rainbows reside inside your head,

Whispering faintly, seductively, “ you’ll never be alone again.”

The brief, caressing notion that the spectrum of light upon water

Could so too have things to say

Touches the edges of your mind and melts into

That moment whence the ascent and the descent collide.
